Parents and Caregivers of those Living with Cerebral Palsy
Growing up with cerebral palsy, I have been blessed with an awesome mother. She has always encouraged me to make the most out of my life, even though I am living with a disability. Admittedly, I have accomplished more than anyone thought was possible in the beginning. I attribute much of my success to my mom.
When I talk to Mom about writing memoirs or creating a website about Living with CP, she is still my #1 fan and encourager. During our conversation, she again reinforced the importance for more conversation about living with cerebral palsy.
When I was born on December 11, 1959, she had no one to talk to, give her advice, or know what to expect as she raised me.
Like me, she hopes this site can also help parents and caregivers. I admit I was a challenge for my family. I truly believe that a lot of the experiences I live through are harder on Mom than me. She wants me to do the best I can, but I am sure she wishes she could protect me from the challenges of living with CP, at the same time. I hope to honor her by helping those of you living with a disabled loved one.
Tough Love
Being the parent or caregiver of an individual with a disability often requires some tough love. For example, if my mom had not turned her back on my struggles, I would never have learned to dress myself, let alone living in my own house, a divorced mom of two. She understood the value of resisting the temptation to always make things easier for me.
Personally, I hope this site will make living with a loved one that happens to have a disability will be made a little easier by this blog. My mom did not have anyone to talk to that completely understood what our family was going through. I hope this site changes that for you and me.
